The Pitt made its way onto Emmy fans’ watchlist after dominating in the casting category at the Creative Arts Emmys. Actor Shawn Hatosy won his first Emmy for Guest Actor in a Drama Series, but the real highlight of the night was the show winning Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series.
The Pitt also won four awards at the Television Critics Association Awards, including Program of the Year and Individual Achievement in Drama. The show garnered 13 Emmy nominations, later winning five of them, including Outstanding Drama Series.
Following Shōgun’s win at the 2024 Emmys, it’s clear that fans and the television academy are itching for diverse ensemble casts.
The Pitt is a medical drama set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It follows a day in the life of doctors, nurses, and patients at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, which is often referred to by the staff as “the pitt,” with each episode being a different hour of their shift. The show’s ensemble cast is primarily female-led, with the majority of them being women of color. Key characters include Dr. Heather Collins (Tracy Ifeachor), who left her mark on fans through her portrayal of an emotional rollercoaster of a shift. As well as Dr. Trinity Santos (Isa Briones), a bold, direct, and unapologetic intern who speaks fluent Tagalog with other Filipino characters, Nurse Princess, played by Kristin Villanueva, and Nurse Perlah, played by Amielynn Abellera.
Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh), a fan favorite, and Dr. Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez), a young prodigy filled with ambition and constantly trying to prove herself, are both strong South Asian representations, but whose storylines don’t revolve around their race, but around their perseverance.
All of these women of color are complex individuals at the forefront of the show. The reason The Pitt works is because every character has their rise above the moment, but by centering these women of color, it gives the audience a taste of something they have clearly been craving.
